Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari unveiled 105 buses running on natural gas in the capital, Abuja, and pledged a million more within a year under a plan to start weaning Africa’s most populous country from its long dependence on gasoline.
Buhari said Tuesday he expects the implementation of the plan to reduce the impact “of the downstream deregulation that this government has painfully implemented,” as well as create new markets and job opportunities. Over 20 states and private companies are set to partner the Federal Government to implement the methanol fuel technology in their respective domains, the Minister of Science and Technology, Ogbonnya Onu, said on Thursday.
Methanol fuel is an alternative biofuel for internal combustion and can be used in other engines, either in combination with Premium Motor Spirit, popularly called petrol, or independently. According to him, some would be made into pallet, which will be used to make interlock, pointing out that interlock made from plastics would last longer than the brick interlocks. The financing package includes a $24 million senior ‘A’ loan from IFC and a $15 million subordinated loan from the International Development Association’s private sector window blended finance facility.
