Hospitality

Africa's hospitality industry is estimated to be worth around $41 billion in 2021, with the potential to grow to $90 billion by 2026. The industry is dominated by hotel and accommodation providers, but also includes restaurants, cafés, bars, pubs, and other hospitality businesses. In fact, there is a very rapid growth of the number of quick service restaurants throughout the continent. Home-grown and foreign franchises are mushrooming. Nigeria’s organized fast-food industry is estimated at $602.5 million and has been growing at a 10% annual rate in recent years.

The African hospitality industry is expected to continue to grow in the coming years due to the increasing demand for travel and tourism in the region. Additionally, the development of new technology and digital infrastructure is making it easier for hospitality businesses to operate and expand.

South Africa welcomed over 14 million tourists in 2019 representing over 3% of its economy. These tourists spent over $9 billion inside the country. South Africa is well-known for its lush national parks and wildlife. Kenya is well-known for its wide range of wildlife and savannah. Tourism accounted for nearly 8% of its economy in 2019 and welcomed over 2 million visitors in 2019. It is one of Kenya’s largest foreign exchange earners. It also has the popular Serengeti National Park. Although Nigeria is not well-known for tourism, Nigeria hosts several festivals including Africa’s largest street party in the Calabar festival. Its hotel business thrives due to business travel and regular visits by Nigerians in the Diaspora. Senegal welcomed over 1.3 million visitors in 2017 as tourists earning the country $470 million or over 2% of GDP. It has popular festivals such as the Dakar Big Carnival and Dakar Music Festival in November. Ghana earned about 2% of the economy from tourists. Recently, Ghana hosted the popular Afrochella festival. Tourism is one of the largest forex earners for Ghana.

The rise of Airbnb and the internet have made it easy to search for new and interesting places to visit for holidays. Also, African governments have increasingly become more proactive in tourism promotion by creating tourism agencies and advertising in international markets.
